ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Broncos' defensive coordinator has been honored on a national stage.

Defensive Coordinator Vance Joseph was named the 2025 Pro Football Writers of America's Assistant Coach of the Year, the PFWA announced Thursday.

Joseph is the second assistant coach in franchise history to earn the award since it was established in 1993, joining former defensive coordinator Wade Phillips in 2015.

Under Joseph's leadership, the Broncos allowed the third fewest points in the NFL while also leading the league in sacks for the second consecutive season. Denver's franchise-record 68 sacks was tied for the fifth most in NFL history.

Joseph's unit ranked first in red-zone defense, allowing teams to score touchdowns on just 42.6 percent of their trips inside the 20-yard line. Denver did not allow a touchdown in five games this season, which set a new franchise mark. The Broncos also held opponents under 20 points on 10 occasions this year.

Denver's defense — which featured a PFWA All-NFL selection in Nik Bonitto and AP All-Pro selections in Zach Allen, Pat Surtain II and Talanoa Hufanga — ranked second in total defense, third-down defense and rushing defense. Denver also allowed the fewest yards per play and passing yards per play.

"Vance has been outstanding and a big reason we're here," Head Coach Sean Payton said Thursday.

Earlier Thursday, Joseph was also named a finalist for AP Assistant Coach of the Year, which will be announced on Feb. 5 at NFL Honors.
