Training Camp 2013: Day 5 Quick Hits

**

ROLL CALL**

After practice, Head Coach John Fox confirmed that Dan Koppen is out for the season, and the center the team signed Sunday evening, Steve Vallos, was on the field for the first time wearing No. 51. He also announced that Manny Ramirez is the starter at center.

Fox said that Robert Ayers left practice with a "slight hamstring" injury and Jacob Tamme is "nursing a quad" injury.

Sylvester Williams left practice early as well with a knee injury. "Doesn't appear to be super serious, but they all could be," Fox said.

PLAYMAKERS

  • One of the biggest plays of the day was the very last one of practice. Running back C.J. Anderson broke free from a big hit in the backfield before turning the corner and sprinting all the way down the sideline for a touchdown. Knowshon Moreno wasn't far behind, running after the undrafted free agent to congratulate him at the end of the play.
  • During red-zone drills, Peyton Manning found Demaryius Thomas for a touchdown in the back of the end zone, much to the delight of the crowd. When it was Brock Osweiler's turn, he hit Gerell Robinson for a touchdown in a tight window between cornerback Tony Carter and safety Quinton Carter.
  • In team drills, Von Miller made a handful of plays in the backfield, once spinning around Ronnie Hillman for what would've been a sack and another time diving at Montee Ball to slow him up enough for the defense to swarm him.
  • Linebacker Uona Kaveinga laid a big hit on newly signed tight end Jake O'Connell during red-zone drills.
  • During one-on-one drills between the cornerbacks and wide receivers, 12-time Pro Bowler Champ Bailey lined up against rookie Tavarres King in an early rep. Bailey leaped to bat away the pass from King, then patted the rookie on the helmet.
  • Also in one-on-ones, Ryan Katz led Quincy McDuffie perfectly into the end zone and the receiver made a diving, fingertip grab for a touchdown.
  • Tony Carter, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Kayvon Webster all snared interceptions in one-on-one drills. Webster also had a pass breakup during a red-zone drill on a pass intended for O'Connell.
  • During one-on-ones between offensive and defensive linemen, guard Louis Vasquez stood out during his repetitions. First, he kept Malik Jackson out of the backfield, then he brought Kevin Vickerson to a standstill. Afterwards, the defensive tackle congratulated Vasquez on the effort with a slap on the helmet. In the same drill, Sylvester Williams got props from his teammates after several reps, including one when he beat Zane Beadles to get to the quarterback.
  • The Chris Harris-Wes Welker battles continue to be some of the most entertaining of camp. During an 11-on-11 session, Harris had extremely tight coverage on the receiver, but Welker still managed to catch a Manning pass just in front of the cornerback.

QUICK HITS

  • The team wore pads for the third consecutive day.
  • After a touchdown catch in red-zone drills, Greg Orton dunked the ball through the uprights. Easily.
  • The team worked on downing punts inside the 5-yard line during special-teams drills using soccer balls.
  • CBS announcer Verne Lundquist watched practice from the sidelines. He will call a Broncos preseason game.

The club will be back on the field for a practice free and open to the public on Wednesday at 10:25 a.m. Tomorrow is a day off for the players.
