ENGLEWOOD, Colo. --In the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft, the Broncos got the best of both worlds when they added Ohio State cornerback Bradley Roby.

"When we looked at the board, No. 1, he was the top guy on our board," Executive Vice President of Football Operations/General Manager John Elway said. "Then, when we looked at our board, there's still a lot of good football players on that board. But when we talked about immediate help and a talented guy like that, he's the guy that would have the biggest impact on us. So that even made it more of a thrill for us that he was still there."

The Broncos front office stuck to its best-player-available philosophy, but were also able to "fulfill a need."

Roby joins a secondary that already added cornerback Aqib Talib and safety T.J. Ward through free agency earlier in the offseason.

"He'll fit right in with the defense we're putting together right now," Elway said.

The newest Bronco brings with him a resume that includes eight career interceptions that he returned for 226 yards and two touchdowns.

Roby started all 37 games he played during three seasons with the Buckeyes, and helped improve his draft stock by running a 4.39-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine. NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock said Roby and No. 8 pick Justin Gilbert "had the best talent of any of the corners in this draft."

"He was the highest guy left and we felt like he had great ability, great speed, great quickness, great athleticism and we're very pleased to have him," Head Coach John Fox said.

Elway predicted that Roby will go into training camp as an outside cornerback, but noted that he has the ability to shift inside with Talib and Chris Harris Jr. as the starting outside cornerbacks.

And with another cornerback added to the roster, Elway said he believes the team has the ability to focus on offense in later rounds as "the depth (of the draft) is definitely on the offensive side."

Elway acknowledged that the Broncos looked into trading up in the first round -- "the price was too high" -- and trading back out of the first round, but "that dried up."

Fortunately, when a player of Roby's caliber fell to the second-to-last pick of the first round, it made the decision easy.

"When we're going through the process, he was a guy that we weren't really expecting to get to us," Elway said.

"We think that we got a gem."
