Roby Brings an Edge, Aggressiveness

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. --The newest member of the Denver Broncos may not be six feet tall or weigh 200 pounds, but he's never been shy about laying a big hit.

"When I was a receiver in high school and the little leagues, my coaches used to send me on crackbacks and I used to just lay people out," Broncos first-round pick Bradley Roby said Friday. "I just loved to do it, you know? And so when I became a corner, I just kept doing it and I took it to another level."

"I want to keep bringing that edge to the defense because I think every defense needs a guy like that."

Executive Vice President of Football Operations/General Manager John Elway already picked up a few "guys like that" in free agency, including defensive backs T.J. Ward and Aqib Talib from the Browns and Patriots, respectively. Thursdaynight, the trend continued with Denver taking Roby, a fast, physical corner from Ohio State.

Though Roby hasn't yet heard how the coaches' plan to use him in their defensive scheme, he sees himself as a strong fit when Denver deploys press-man coverage.
"It's something I enjoy to do; I think it's very effective," Roby said. "Actually, that's one of the strongest things about my game -- my press man."

In addition to his aggressiveness -- a trait that also shined through with his work on special teams in college -- Roby isn't lacking for confidence.

"I think I was the best guy at my position this year (in the Draft), honestly. I'm not taking anything away from the other guys, but I think I was the best."

"It's going to make me work harder to prove that throughout this year."

Roby will be able to get started on that plan quickly, with his first day on the field for the Broncos just a week away. The Broncos' rookies will convene for a three-day minicamp starting Friday, May 16.

And Roby is already looking forward to refining the other parts of his game when the veterans arrive for the remaining camp.

"They've mastered the details. So I'll definitely get with them just watching film-wise, just practice-wise -- how to practice -- specific moves, things like that."
