ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- With their first pick in the second round, the Broncos took a player to take down opposing passers.

With their second -- No. 57 overall -- the Broncos took a passer.

Arizona State quarterback Brock Osweiler is headed to Denver.

"Excited that Brock Osweiler is going to be a Bronco," Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway tweeted. "Very talented and will have a great opportunity to learn from one of the best."

The 6-7, 242-pound Osweiler started 15 of 25 games at Arizona State, completing 60.5 percent of his passes for 5,082 yards and 33 touchdowns to just 15 interceptions.

He also scored four touchdowns with his feet, running for 221 yards in his career.

"I feel like I'm my own style of a quarterback," Osweiler said at the NFL Scouting Combine. "I don't feel like there has ever been a quarterback who is 6-7, 240 pounds and has the athleticism I do and can make every throw on the football field."

Osweiler, who is one of just two players in Arizona State history to complete more than 60 percent of his passes in his career, became just the fourth player in Pac-12 conference history to throw for more than 4,000 yards in a season, which he did in 2011.

Osweiler threw for at least 300 yards in seven of his 15 starts.

"Since I was eight years old, it's been a dream of mine, a goal of mine, to play quarterback in the NFL," he said.

But that dream almost went to the wayside, as Osweiler was committed to Gonzaga to play basketball for nearly three years before deciding that he simply couldn't give up football, the game that he loves.

He said his time as a basketball player allowed him to be a more successful quarterback.

"I think in basketball to be a successful player you have to have great footwork," he said. "And obviously as a quarterback in the pocket, to evade rushers and blitzers and make moves and get the ball off, you have to have great feet. So basketball, as far as the footwork, has definitely transitioned over to my football game.

"As well as my vision," he continued. "On the basketball court, you can be pushing the ball up the court, maybe bringing it up on the side and you've got to see somebody off in the corner, make a throw down the lane. Same thing as a quarterback. You're sliding in the pocket, trying to find alleys to get the ball down field."

He earned All-Pac 12 conference second-team honors from The NFL Draft Report in 2011 as a team captain, and was a Maxwell Award Watch List member.

Osweiler joins Peyton Manning, Caleb Hanie and Adam Weber as the fourth quarterback on the roster.

The Broncos' next selection is in the third round, No. 87 overall.
