ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — In the wake of an emotional win, it would be understandable for a team to relax.
To reflect on four consecutive wins, including a pair of double-digit fourth-quarter comebacks.
Ahead of a Week 8 matchup with the Cowboys, though, Courtland Sutton and the Broncos aren't celebrating their prior success.
Instead, they're gearing up for the next hunt.
"It's like a lion that just got done eating and they're going to go take a nap," Sutton said. "You don't want to be that lion that is eating, and they're over there under the tree kicking it, minding their business. [Instead] it's, 'No, we're still hunting.' You have to have that mindset. I think that that's something this team still has."
The Broncos sit atop the AFC West as they welcome the Cowboys (3-3-1) and their league-leading offense, and Head Coach Sean Payton believes in his team's ability to remain desperate for a win. On Sunday in Denver, the Broncos will look to extend their league-leading eight-game active home winning streak and four-game overall win streak that's tied for the NFL's best.
"I think this is a veteran team that understands how to get on to the next challenge," Payton said Wednesday. "Certainly, this next team is a big challenge. They understand that."
Cornerback Pat Surtain II, who is no stranger to success or winning streaks from his prolific career at Alabama, said top-performing teams learn "how to ride the highs and lows" of an NFL season and remain levelheaded.
"There are ups and downs in this game," Surtain said. "There are challenges in this game. I feel like if we just keep on staying consistent [and] stay diligent along this process, nothing should affect us. We just focus on internally what we can do inside the building and not worry about the outside noise."
The Broncos may find it easier to turn the page given the improvement they're still looking to find. Denver continues to emphasize the importance of limiting penalties after being flagged 12 times for 127 yards in Sunday's win over the Giants. The Broncos' defense gave up multiple long third- and fourth-down conversions and three touchdowns of at least 30 yards, while Denver's offense failed to score until the fourth quarter. The inconsistency in Denver's wins has created a clear focal point ahead of a inter-conference matchup with one of the most explosive offenses in football.
"The games that we've won have been emotional, sure, but there's been a lot of frustration that comes with those wins in a way that we know we can play better and we need to play better," tackle Mike McGlinchey said. "… The frustration of execution and not doing our part for 45 minutes of the game has to change. I don't think there's going to be any letdown emotionally because the way we've won the last few, because I think there's a heightened awareness on how to get it right."
If the Broncos need any added motivation, Sutton may be able to provide it. The veteran wide receiver knows what it's like to not enjoy this level of success. During the early years of his career, he battled through several long losing streaks — and he didn't reach the postseason until the seventh year of his career. With that perspective, Sutton is driven to not let the current winning streak slip away.
"We've sat in the shadows long enough of almost there, almost there, almost there," Sutton said. "It's like we're putting together some good games, but let's not forget where we were and where we're trying to get to.
"We have to keep that same mindset of being hungry."
