The Lead

Earlier this week, 12 former NFL coaches took the next step toward the Pro Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2026.

One of those 12 individuals will soon be the Coach finalist for the Hall of Fame, and Ring of Fame head coach Mike Shanahan is among those under consideration.

Following the Broncos' Wednesday practice, Head Coach Sean Payton spoke glowingly of Shanahan's candidacy for a gold jacket.

"He should be in," Payton said. "He's going to get in. He needs to get in sooner than later."

Payton highlighted Shanahan's success in Denver — which included back-to-back world championships — his coaching tree and his wide-reaching impact on NFL offenses as reasons for his inclusion in pro football's most exclusive fraternity.

"Two championships, the coaching tree, the history as a coordinator and then as a head coach," Payton said. "I don't even want to compare him against others that are in or candidates to be in, but his impact, beyond just two Super Bowls, his impact on the game and offensively, having played against his teams."

Shanahan has been a semifinalist in each of the last two years, and the Broncos' all-time winningest coach will have another chance to earn a gold jacket in the coming weeks and months.

"It's time," Payton said.
