Von Miller will not play in preseason opener vs. Chicago

CHICAGO —All-Pro outside linebacker Von Miller will not play in Thursday night's game against the Chicago Bears.

As Shane Ray and Shaquil Barrett recover from injuries, keeping Miller healthy is of paramount importance for the Broncos.

Miller, who tallied 13.5 sacks and three forced fumbles in 2016, is expected to play later in the preseason.

Kasim Edebali, Vontarrius Dora and rookie DeMarcus Walker should see extensive playing time in Miller's place.

Miller underwent a workout on the Soldier Field grass a few hours before kickoff.

The rest of the Broncos' starting defense, which will also be without T.J. Ward and Todd Davis, will play three series, at most.

Head Coach Vance Joseph said ahead of Thursday's game that a dominant series against the Bears' first-team offense could result in even fewer snaps for the unit.

The Broncos' No. 1 offense is likely to see more playing time.

Denver kicks off its preseason slate at Soldier Field at 6 p.m. MDT.
