Broncos, Briefly: Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2019

Mike Munchak is 59 and has been in the NFL as a player or coach every year since 1982. That alone qualifies him as old school.

But to last that long in a what-you-have-done-lately league requires an ability to adapt to new players, constantly fine-tune your approach and win games. To which, Munchak can say, "Check, check, check."

Vic Fangio had been the Broncos coach for all of a matter of hours in January when, in the middle of introducing himself to the region in a gathering broadcast live throughout the state, he finished off a long answer about the prospect of coaching Miller and Bradley Chubb with the 14 words everybody seems to remember -- "I think Von Miller can play even better than he's played in his career."

Lindsay, the Broncos' feel-good-story and the NFL's surprise of 2018, has an internal dial that automatically turns to "high" when he steps on the field. He's pumped and he's pissed, cocky yet determined — a cocktail of emotion that has been a guiding force at every level of football.

Everything old is new again in Denver, where the Broncos are in remake mode after missing the playoffs the last three seasons and suffering their first back-to-back losing seasons since 1971-72.

Veteran NFL defensive assistant Vic Fangio has his first head-coaching gig after spending the last four seasons as the Bears' defensive coordinator, and Joe Flacco will take over at quarterback after being obtained from Baltimore in an offseason trade.
