The Lead

The NFL is adding a new recognition to its game-day uniforms, and one of Denver's own will be among the first to wear it.

The league will spotlight the achievements of its most elite players for the first time by swapping the traditional NFL shield patch for a gold version inspired by the NFL Honors logo, according to an ESPN report. The patch will be worn by winners of five Associated Press awards from the 2024 season, including Most Valuable Player, Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Offensive Rookie of the Year and Defensive Rookie of the Year.

That means Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain II, the reigning AP Defensive Player of the Year, will rep the patch on his collar all season long — including both the regular season and playoffs. The league intends to continue the initiative in future years.

Surtain will be one of several stars across the league showcasing the new look. Eagles running back Saquon Barkley, the NFL's 2024 Offensive Player of the Year, will be the first to take the field with the gold shield during Thursday night's prime-time season opener between Philadelphia and Dallas.

The concept isn't entirely new to sports. Major League Baseball introduced a similar recognition earlier this year, with six players sporting gold-accented logos on their jerseys following award-winning seasons. The NFL also has precedent with its gold patches, as Walter Payton Man of the Year Award winners already wear a commemorative token throughout their careers.
