Colquitt Nets Another Record

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- For punter Britton Colquitt, setting a franchise record is a big deal - not because of the personal accomplishment, but because it means he has helped the team substantially.

Colquitt's net punting average of 42.1 yards broke his own team record that he set last year by nearly two yards. A punt's net distance is based on where the opposing team returns the punt to, not how far the ball actually flew, making it the most significant statistic for a punter.

"The most important thing is the net punting average because it helps our team," Colquitt said. "That's why it's important to me, not because of any kind of record. Usually, when you accomplish something that helps the team, it helps yourself as far as records are concerned. But I'm more concerned about helping the team."

Colquitt puts the team's best interest first, but he also admits that knowing his name is in the Broncos record books is a special feeling.

"There have been a lot of great punters here," Colquitt said. "To have your name mentioned at all in this franchise's history is just awesome. It has been such a storied, great franchise. I'm definitely honored for that."

Colquitt followed up a record-breaking 2011 season with a net punting average that ranked third in the NFL and held opponents to 6 yards per return, the second-best mark in the league.

Heading into the postseason, the fourth-year punter knows his experience in last year's playoffs will be beneficial.

"Just knowing what it's about, not having those big eyes like, 'What is this? I've never been here before,' Colquitt said. "There is so much pressure and we have been in enough pressure games. Being in two (playoff) games last year will definitely help. It helps to be at home. It also helps to have the team that we have."
