Broncos, Briefly: Thursday, Sept. 5, 2019

If defenses truly win championships, the teams at the top of the list should have memorable 2019 seasons.

The catchphrase "Death by Inches" has not been thrown around much at news conferences since Fangio was introduced as the head coach when he offered his philosophy. He's now more concerned about the implementation of his methods. Study Fangio's coaching habits and it's clear that the message has sparked initial flames of a Broncos' culture change.

"It's a great matchup. It's one of the best versus the best who's been doing it for a long time," Chris said on Wednesday, previewing the Broncos and Raiders opening week matchup on Monday night. "We've been playing at a high level for a while. So it's going to be fun… It's going to be a great competition."

"It came together fairly quickly," Broncos president/CEO Joe Ellis told The Athletic. "I would say in the last 2-3 months. Empower has been a partner of ours since 2015, our Super Bowl season. Empower Retirement also manages our retirement accounts here at the Broncos, so we have a great relationship with them.

"It moved very quickly because we both had the objective of getting this together, if we could do a deal, prior to the start of this season. And we were able to succeed in that endeavor and now we're off and running with Empower Field at Mile High."

This guy is not Von Miller. He's not Joe Flacco, Emmanuel Sanders, Bradley Chubb, any of the big-money household names who will lead the Broncos into Oakland on "Monday Night Football."

This guy's hanging on by the cleats tied to his feet, and there's a herd of those guys on the back end of this Broncos roster — more than we've seen here in John Elway's eight previous seasons as general manager. The Broncos went nuts on the waiver wire and added seven players from other teams, a sure sign Elway and Vic Fangio won't stop there, either.

After wild, winding roads, their next big shot is here.
