King, who has 13 seasons of coaching experience—including five in the NFL—joined Denver after spending the 2022 season as assistant offensive line coach for the Chicago Bears.
In King's first two seasons with the Broncos, Denver's offensive line has recorded the second-highest pass blocking efficiency (88.4). The line is also being responsible for the third-fewest sacks (30), third-fewest quarterback pressures (196) and fifth-fewest hits (38) during that span.
With the assistance of King, Denver posted its first winning season in eight years in 2024 as well as its first playoff appearance since the 2015 season.
Denver's offensive line became one of the best in the NFL in 2024, recording the highest pass blocking efficiency (90.8) while also allowing the third-fewest sacks (24) and third-fewest knock downs (55). Guard Quinn Meinerz also had a career year with the help of King, earning first-team All-Pro honors from the Associated Press after allowing the fewest quarterback hurries (7) and recording the highest pass blocking efficiency (99.0) among NFL guards with at least 900 snaps.
In 2023, the Broncos' offensive line vastly improved, with Denver tying for the highest average time in the pocket allowed in the league with 2.7 seconds. With the help of King, Meinerz allowed only 23 quarterback pressures all season—which was tied for the fourth-fewest among guards with at least 625 pass blocking snaps—and center Lloyd Cushenberry III permitted only nine quarterback hurries against—the fewest among centers with at least 625 pass blocking snaps.
During the 2022 season in Chicago, King helped coach an offensive line that paved the way for the No. 1 rushing attack in the NFL (177.3 ypg). The Bears' 2022 per game rushing average was the team's highest in a single season since 1984 (185.9 ypg.).
Chicago's offensive line helped the team post Top-10 rankings in multiple rushing categories, including yards per carry (5.4—1st), runs of 10-plus yards (81—2nd), attempts (559—2nd), first downs (148—5th) and touchdowns (18—T-7th).
Protected by a stout front five, quarterback Justin Fields became just the third quarterback in NFL history to rush for over 1,000 yards in a single season, joining Lamar Jackson (2019, '20) and Michael Vick (2006). Fields finished the season with eight rushing scores, which tied for second most in a single season by a Bears quarterback.
Entering the NFL with the Las Vegas Raiders, King originally joined the team as an offensive quality control coach (2020) before being promoted to tight ends coach (2021). Under King's tutelage in 2021, tight end Darren Waller posted the sixth-most receptions in the AFC (55) and added 665 receiving yards with two scores in 11 games played.
Working primarily with the offensive line in 2020, King helped guide a group that surrendered only 28 sacks, which ranked 10th in the NFL. The Raider's offensive line posted four games in which the unit allowed zero sacks.
In 2021, running back Josh Jacobs posted his second career 1,000-yard season and tallied a career-high 12 rushing scores. He was 1-of-5 running backs that season (Nick Chubb, Dalvin Cook, Derrick Henry, Jonathan Taylor) to post totals of at least 1,000 rushing yards with 10 touchdowns on the ground.
Prior to joining the NFL, King spent five years at the University of Dayton, first serving as the offensive line coach (2015-16) before working his way to offensive coordinator (2017-19) for his final three seasons with the program.
King helped guide the Flyers to one of the top offenses in FCS during his time leading the offense. In 2019, Dayton ranked Top-10 in multiple offensive categories while posting the No. 1 scoring offense with 42.6 points per game.
In the 2018 and '19 seasons, the Flyers averaged over seven yards per play, and were just 1-of-6 NCAA Division I programs to accomplish the feat. While at Dayton, King coached tight end Adam Trautman, who earned first-team All-America honors and was selected in the third round (105th overall) by New Orleans in the 2020 NFL Draft.
King spent one year (2014) as an offensive quality control coach for Syracuse University, where he focused mainly on the offensive line. Following the season, offensive lineman Sean Hickey earned All-ACC third-team recognition by the league's coaches.
King began his coaching career at the University of Toledo, where he worked as an offensive quality control assistant from 2012-13.
Selected by Tampa Bay in the fourth round (133rd overall) of the 2004 NFL Draft, King appeared in 34 career regular-season games (1 start) and two postseason contests at center for the Atlanta Falcons (2004-06). For his career, King was only called for two penalties.
A graduate of Northwestern University, King was a four-year starter on the offensive line for the Wildcats, earning All-Big Ten honorable mention honors three times in his career. He earned his bachelor's degree in secondary education from Northwestern in 2004.
Austin King is a native of Cincinnati.
