Sundays with Sacco: Broncos should return to international stage

During this week's NFL Annual Meeting, Broncos president/CEO Joe Ellis did an interview with Broncos TV and voiced his desire for another international game for the Broncos.

As someone who did public relations for seven of those games in the now-defunct American Bowl series, I strongly second Ellis' sentiment.

During the 1980s and 1990s the Broncos played twice in Tokyo, as well as represented Denver and the NFL in London, Berlin, Barcelona, Mexico City and Sydney.

It was great then, and remains great now — something for all participating teams to feel great about, along with their legions of fans. Not only are you extending the NFL brand worldwide and carrying along the colors of Broncos Country, but it is an important part of franchise development.

No team should ever want to play all its games at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time. That is the kickoff time when you are not one of the most desirable teams to watch.

It is all about television, and when it comes to TV, there is nothing like prime time. Players love displaying their talents when the football world is watching.

And in terms of the chaos in preparation that is created, I say, embrace it.

After all, you do not win the Super Bowl without playing in a fishbowl with everyone watching. It is naturally desirable and becomes an elixir.

This year, after winning Super Bowl 50, the Broncos can once again expect to play in the maximum allowed number of national TV games.

That is great for the Broncos, Denver and the entire Mountain Time zone.

Not only should the franchise and its fanbase accept and embrace the challenge and spotlight, but they should hope the NFL shines it even brighter on Denver with a return to the International Series in the relatively near future.

Broncos Country would again be Broncos World.
