ENGLEWOOD, Colo. —The Denver Broncos named Jeremy Cole of Cotopaxi High School as their NFL High School Coach of the Week presented by the Colorado National Guard.
In his first year as head coach of the Cotopaxi Pirates, Cole has led his team to a 4-2 start and posted the ninth-highest scoring game in Colorado high school football history on Friday when Cotopaxi beat Antonito High School 83-56.
In a game with a combined 139 points—57 second-half points for the Pirates—Cotopaxi quarterback Alex Burger ran for eight touchdowns and tossed for two.
"We had to keep scoring," Cole said. "Part way through the third quarter, I thought, 'Uh-oh, we're going to have to score every time to win this game.'"
Cotopaxi's offense produced 12 touchdowns and 552 yards of offense (336 rush/216 pass), including 70 rushing yards and a touchdown from center Brandon Kohl.
"It was an accident," Cole said. "He's normally our center."
Cole, 43, hails from Burnet, Texas where he was a running back for round Rock Westwood high School in Austin, Texas from 1985-88. He garnered all-district and all-Central Texas honors as a junior and senior and then went on to start at running back for Division III Hardin-Simmons from 1989-90. Cole was an assistant coach at Cotopaxi in 2013 before being promoted to head coach.
The Denver Broncos will recognize 10 High School Coach of the Week honorees during the regular season, as well as a Coach of the Year at the end of the season. The program is presented by the Colorado National Guard with a selection committee led by The Denver Post's Neil Devlin. The committee also includes Broncos Ring of Fame defensive back Billy Thompson and 850 KOA's Andy Lindahl.
