COMMUNITY: Fight Like a Bronco

FIGHT LIKE A BRONCO

In September 2015, Denver Broncos Assistant Turf Manager Luke Kellerman was diagnosed with colorectal cancer, and began formulating a proposal for an expansion of the NFL's "A Crucial Catch" campaign.

Seven months later, the proposal came to life when the team announced "Fight Like A Bronco", an all-inclusive campaign recognizing all those affected by cancer. The yearlong campaign focuses on prevention and screenings, support for those currently battling cancer, and celebrating survivors.

PREVENTION & SCREENINGS SUPPORT CELEBRATION
Since 2016, the Broncos have donated $120,000 to help fund research and prevention efforts focusing on the areas of Breast Cancer Awareness, Colorectal Cancer Screenings, Ovarian Cancer Research, Pediatric Cancer Research. Funding directed to the prevention of colorectal cancer since Kellerman’s diagnoses in 2015 has resulted in more than 12,000 people gaining access to colorectal screenings opportunities across Colorado. Throughout the year, Denver Broncos players, alumni, cheerleaders, staff and Miles the Mascot make countless visits to those battling cancer at both the University of Colorado Hospital and Children’s Hospital Colorado. Each October, the team honors more than 100 cancer survivors at a designated "Fight Like a Bronco" home game to celebrate the courage of all cancer survivors—men, women and children. Survivors and their guests are treated to a pre-game reception with President and CEO Joe Ellis, and then recognized on-field during halftime.

While Kellerman tragically lost his battle with cancer on October 26, 2017 at age 34, his legacy lives on through the team's "Fight Like a Bronco" campaign.

"There needs to be 34 year-olds that get stuff like this, which sucks. But it needs to happen in order for change," said Kellerman. "This cancer stuff—we're ready for it to be done with and hopefully touch as many people as we possibly can. That's our goal."
