Training Camp 2013: Day 4 Quick Hits

**

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- **The Broncos were back in pads for the second consecutive day Sunday, and though it was a rainy early morning, that didn't deter thousands of fans from packing the Dove Valley hillside overlooking the practice fields.

Let's recap the action.

ROLL CALL

Midway through practice, center Dan Koppen was carted off the field after a run play during nine-on-sevens and did not return. Fox called it a knee injury and said Koppen will be evaluated.

"You never like to see players get injured, particularly severely injured," Fox said. "But you understand if you do this long enough, whether you're a player or a coach, it happens."

Derek Wolfe suffered an ankle injury during practice and did not return. Ryan Clady was limited for the session and C.J. Davis (ankle) and Andre Caldwell (hamstring) did not participate.

Davis, Caldwell and Chris Kuper -- who is on the Physically Unable to Perform list -- worked with strength and conditioning coaches during practice.

PLAYMAKERS

  • Duke Ihenacho grabbed an interception again Sunday, this one off a bobbled pass that he corralled just before it hit the ground. He ran it back for a touchdown and shot the ball through the uprights to celebrate, firing up the crowd.
  • During a team drill, Peyton Manning rolled out of the pocket to his right and found Julius Thomas on the sideline. The tight end made a diving catch right in front of the crowd.
  • For the first few days of camp, it had been Wes Welker who got the better of the matchup against cornerback Chris Harris. On Sunday, the tables turned a little. Harris had several diving breakups of passes intended for Welker, including one at the last second on a pass to the receiver in the back corner of the end zone.
"It's the best versus the best -- Wes is a guy that's going to compete and I'm going to compete every day," Harris said. "It was just my day today. That's just how it goes. It's two great players going against each other. He has his days, I have my days.
We're going to be well-prepared once the regular-season comes."
  • That's not to say Welker didn't have plays of his own. In a red-zone, seven-on-seven drill late in practice, Manning found Eric Decker for a touchdown and then Welker for back-to-back scores on three consecutive passes.
  • During a different red-zone drill, there were a number of notable defensive plays, including a pass breakup by defensive tackle Terrance Knighton and safeties Rahim Moore and Quinton Carter keeping Julius Thomas and Jacob Tamme, respectively, out of the end zone after catches.
  • Linebacker Danny Trevathan had an impressive diving interception of a Brock Osweiler pass in the end zone, causing his defensive teammates to swarm him after the play.
  • In 9-on-7 drills focused exclusively on running plays, Ronnie Hillman had two long runs and Jeremiah Johnson took one carry to the house, prompting Osweiler to hold both hands up to signal the score. Afterwards, Running Backs Coach Eric Studesville congratulated each offensive lineman in on the play.
  • During one-on-one drills between offensive and defensive linemen, there were standouts on both sides of the ball. The two most notable performances might have been Orlando Franklin keeping Von Miller out of the backfield, which drew praise from Offensive Line Coach Dave Magazu, and rookie defensive tackle Sylvester Williams throwing Zane Beadles to the ground on his repetition.
  • In the final team session of the practice, Manning found Demaryius Thomas sprinting down the sideline for a long touchdown that drew some of the loudest cheers of the day from the crowd.

QUICK HITS

  • Former Colts and Chargers safety Bob Sanders, who played seven seasons with Manning in Indianapolis, watched Sunday's practice from the VIP tent.
  • Every day, Strength and Conditioning Coach Luke Richesson calls on a player to break down the team's huddle to start practice. Sunday, it was Wesley Woodyard's turn. Manning broke down the opening huddle of training camp on Thursday, Champ Bailey handled the duties on Friday and Demaryius Thomas was called on for Saturday's padded practice.
  • Fans stretching along with the team during warmups seems to have become a tradition. We'll see if Monday's crowd keeps it up.
  • The crowd was amped up Sunday, as wide receivers running deep routes by themselves during individual drills brought loud cheers.
