The Squeeze: Kubiak tops first-year coach rankings and Manning talks offense

Good morning, #BroncosCountry –

Happy Orange Friday! We hope wherever you are that you're decked out in orange and blue in preparation for the game in Indianapolis this weekend. While you're waiting for Sunday, here are a couple headlines to get caught up on, starting with our coach:

1. Kubiak tops newly appointed head coaches

While Head Coach Gary Kubiak boasts an offense-heavy resume, his first season in Denver so far has left many in awe of his defense.

ESPN's senior writer John Clayton ranked the NFL's first-year head coaches, and of the seven added for the 2015 season Kubiak ranks No. 1.

Even though he was the only offensive coach hired during the offseason, Kubiak's biggest success has been on defense. He hired Wade Phillips to coach the defense, and Phillips has unleashed a one-gap, 3-4 defense that has more speed than any group he has had in any other stop. The Broncos rank first in seven defensive categories. They have 29 sacks and have forced 15 turnovers. They are the only team that hasn't allowed a point in the first quarter.

2. Manning talks about how to keep the momentum going
Quarterback Peyton Manning talked with Dave Logan of KOA NewsRadio for his weekly radio segment and covered the potential of breaking Brett Favre's passing-yards record and looked back at the Broncos' best offensive game on Sunday.

"It certainly was a good game of execution, but it's still about doing it every week," Manning said of the offense against the Packers. "You try to establish some kind of consistency. We had a great week of preparation last week and took that to the playing field. That's your goal every week, sometimes you do it, sometimes you don't. Getting off to a fast start certainly helped. That kind of set the tone for the game."

This week Denver traded for two-time Pro Bowl tight end Vernon Davis from the 49ers, giving Manning another offensive threat to add to his arsenal.

"Vernon, obviously his flexibility, his ability to play tight end, to be in the slot, he's played even outside some," Manning said. "He's got great speed, which the old saying is true, There's no substitute for speed, and he's got it. We just hope he can add to our different personnels that we have and can just help us be a better offense."
