The Squeeze: Building the defense and Norwood's baby girl

Good morning, #BroncosCountry –

There are only a few days before the Broncos head to Indianapolis to take on the Colts for a little revenge from the 2014 playoffs. In the meantime, here are a couple headlines to get caught up on, starting with the defense and John Elway:

1. How the defense was built
There's no doubt that Hall of Fame quarterback and Broncos GM/Executive VP of Football Operations John Elway has spent plenty of time studying film of opposing defenses. Because of this aptitude for picking apart defenses, Elway has quietly assembled one of the best defenses in NFL history.

Yahoo!’s Frank Schwab broke down how Denver’s elite defense was built over the years, starting from his only inherited player, safety David Bruton Jr., to the draft picks, free agents and undrafted CFA finds of 2014 and 2015 that help make the defense No. 1 this season.

The biggest season for the Broncos may have been in 2014 when Elway selected CB Bradley Roby in the first of the draft, signed free agents OLB DeMarcus Ware, S T.J. Ward and CB Aqib Talib and undrafted free agent OLB Shaq Barrett.

This was the offseason that showed Elway had a high priority to build a top defense. He wasn't a GM who leaned offense based on his playing background. And he wanted a defense with a fierce identity.

2. Welcome to the Broncos family, Franni!

Head Coach Gary Kubiak announced Wednesday that wide receiver Jordan Norwood was excused from practice after his wife went into labor. Later that day, Norwood and his wife welcomed a daughter, Franni Grace Norwood, into the world.

Congrats to the Norwood family!
