The Athletic's Chase Daniel offers insights on Broncos' defense, offseason additions

On Day 3 of the Broncos' Training Camp powered by Ford, the Broncos put on pads for a physical session and welcomed alumni back to watch practice.

Chase Daniel, a 14-year NFL quarterback and co-host of The Athletic's "Scoop City" podcast, stopped by training camp Monday to witness the Broncos' first day in pads. Daniel stuck around to share his insights on what makes this year's squad stand out.

Kennedy Rehklau: You've played for Head Coach Sean Payton and know his culture well. How do you see the Broncos' trajectory heading into Year 3 under Coach Payton?

Chase Daniel: "The trajectory for me, it's never been higher. The expectations come with that after multiple wins last year, and obviously a playoff berth, but a loss to Buffalo. Then you look at what they were able to do in free agency, then you were able to see what they did with the draft. Sean Payton loves the draft; he told me personally that he loves this draft class.

"And then you get to come out here and watch it in person — I know it's only the first day in pads. Then you get to talk to people around the building, and they're like 'I love this team.' There's expectations there now. You're not going to surprise anyone. That's a different path in the NFL you have to take. The target's on your back now a little bit.

"They're a really good team and it's a tough division. But the way Bo Nix plays, the way Sean Payton has been able to handle his growth — it's been great. So, I think the trajectory is high."

KR: What stands about Bo Nix's rookie season, and what do you expect in his second year?

CD: "I think the first thing is that we were here in August of last year when Bo was a rookie — maybe in his 10th or 12th practice — and now we're back here today. The growth from then to today, just the operation — we were talking about when we were interviewing him earlier — the operation of getting in and out of the huddle is so much smoother. He doesn't feel like he needs to worry about all this other stuff, he can actually focus on his job. You saw the growth steadily through the rookie year, right? From [Offensive Pass Game Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach] Davis Webb helping him out, to [Offensive Coordinator] Joe Lombardi, to [Senior Offensive Assistant] Pete Carmichael, to [former Passing Game Coordinator] John Morton — all of these guys that have his best interest in mind.

"He's been able to take that next step because of the coaching. But then you go out there and watch him. He can make all the throws. It's the off-platform stuff that you see Patrick Mahomes do. He can scramble around, and he's a lot better of an athlete than you think. He's extremely accurate. So when you break it down and watch it on film, and then you're able to come out here and see it in person again — it is really good."

KR: What excites you most about this Broncos team?

CD: "We have talked a lot about offense, so, their defense. Their defense in front and their secondary. … Look, I know they were third in points per game last year, but they are an attacking style defense with [Defensive Coordinator] Vance Joseph. They want to rush five, pressure the quarterback, and they want the ball to come out of your hands. Look at what they did against the best quarterback, in my opinion, in the league last year: Patrick Mahomes. They should have beaten him twice, they played Mahomes really well. I just think the sky's the limit for this defense. If you're able to get pressure on a quarterback, right, as a quarterback you're thinking, I need to get the ball up quickly —you better not throw it to [Pat] Surtain [II]'s side, he will just pick-six it. You look at the depth that they have, too. I'm very excited about their defense, for sure."

KR: Who jumps out to you from the offseason additions?

CD: "I think that one of the pieces the Broncos were missing last year was a playmaker tight end. So, you go to Evan Engram. Coming over from Jacksonville, just what he's able to do, how good of an athlete he is, how good of a player he is, how good of a person he is. He fits in with this culture. … I think he's going to have a big year."
