ENGLEWOOD, Colo. --Kenny Anunike's quest to make it back to the field for the Broncos ended Monday when he was waived.

To fill Anunike's spot on the 90-man roster, the Broncos brought back safety Ryan Murphy, an Oregon State product who spent the 2015 season on the practice squad.

The move brings a frustrating end to a star-crossed 27 months for Anunike in which he played three regular-season games, but saw both of his two previous seasons end on injured reserve because of an elbow injury in 2014 and a knee injury a year later.

He had brief chances to flash his promise, most prominently the preseason opener at Seattle last year, where he racked up eight tackles, a sack and a forced fumble.

But injuries sidetracked Anunike to a rare and unfortunate degree. His pass-rushing abilities and variety of moves earned him an NFL opportunity despite the fact that he endured two knee injuries that cost him two seasons at Duke. The extent of his injuries was so great that the NCAA granted him a rare sixth season of eligibility.
