Broncos, Briefly: Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2019

The final stage is set for the final act of Broncos' backup quarterback competition and the only certainty is a collective mindset shared between Kevin Hogan and Brett Rypien: Let it fly.

The Broncos reported for training camp on July 17. It has been a long climb to the Sept. 9 opener. Exhibition games are difficult to watch for any team, let alone one coming off 11 wins over the past two years. However, Thursday's fifth preseason game means everything to players on the roster bubble, like quarterbacks Kevin Hogan and Brett Rypien, or even tight end Jake Butt, who has not practiced since making his debut last week.

The Denver Broncos will cut their roster to 53 players by 4 p.m. ET Saturday. Here's a projection, with a caveat the Broncos likely will add multiple players on waiver claims to replace some of the names on this list before the weekend is out.

Alfred Williams' departure from 104.3 The Fan to KOA 94.1 FM in February sent shockwaves through Denver media. For 10 years he sat opposite Darren "DMac" McKee on The Fan's "The Drive," long the toprated sports talk show in the local market, and the two appeared on track to remain a duo as long as they desired.

But his exit was only the first of multiple surprises.
