Last season, Moreland helped coach guard Alijah Vera-Tucker, who was selected to the Pro Football Writers of America 2021 All-Rookie Team. Selected by the Jets in the first round (16th overall) of 2021 NFL Draft, Vera-Tucker started all 16 games at left guard during his rookie season and logged the most snaps (1,026) among the Jets' offensive linemen.
Prior to the Jets, Moreland coached at his alma mater, Western Michigan University, where he spent 11 combined seasons (2005-11, '17-20) over two stints. During his 11 years on staff, the Broncos accumulated a 71-59 (.546) record and appeared in five bowl games.
In Moreland's second stint with Western Michigan, he worked as offensive coordinator while also coaching the offensive line (2017-19) and tight end (2020) positions. During the four-year span from 2017-20, Moreland coached three players—running back LeVante Bellamy (Doak Walker Award), tight end Giovanni Ricci (John Mackey Award) and tackle Chukwuma Okorafor (Outland Trophy)—who were all named semifinalists for national awards at their respective positions.
Moreland first joined the Western Michigan coaching staff in 2005, working as tight ends coach for seven seasons from 2005-11.
Prior to his time at Western Michigan, Moreland coached a total of four seasons at Air Force Academy, where he instructed the tight ends (2012-14) and wide receivers (2016). Between his stints with the Falcons, Moreland spent the 2015 season at Syracuse University, coaching the offensive tackles and tight ends.
Moreland began his coaching career in 2003 after playing a combined six years at the collegiate (1996-99) and NFL (2000-01) level. He coached tight ends for NCAA Division III Elmhurst (Ill.) College in 2003 before serving as special teams coordinator/offensive assistant for NCAA Division II St. Joseph's College (Rensselaer, Ind.) in 2004.
After entering the NFL as a college free agent, Moreland played two seasons with the N.Y. Jets and Cleveland Browns. He appeared in 11 games (1 start) at tight end and recorded three receptions during his career.
A first-team all-conference selection and team captain, Moreland played four years at Western Michigan from 1996-99. He concluded his collegiate career ranked as Western Michigan's all-time leader in receptions (143) and touchdowns (13) among tight ends.
Moreland graduated from Western Michigan with a bachelor's degree in business administration and marketing. He and his wife, Anne, have three daughters, Courtney, Grace and Emma.
