Steele, who has eight previous seasons of NFL experience, spent the 2021 campaign working as assistant offensive line coach for Minnesota. He helped coach tackle Brian O'Neill to his first career Pro Bowl selection and assisted an offensive line that allowed the fifth-fewest sacks (30) in the league.
The Vikings had five players who earned Pro Bowl nods in 2021, including four from the offensive side of the ball. Minnesota's offensive line helped block for running back Dalvin Cook and wide receiver Justin Jefferson who eclipsed 1,000-yard rushing and receiving seasons, respectively, while quarterback Kirk Cousins produced the third 4,000-yard, 30-touchdown season of his career.
Before Minnesota, Steele coached two seasons in Atlanta, serving as an offensive assistant (2019) before being promoted tight ends coach (2020). Under Steele's instruction in 2020, tight end Hayden Hurst posted a career year, totaling 56 receptions for 571 yards (10.2 avg.) with six touchdowns.
Preceding his time with the Vikings, Steele spent five seasons with Tampa Bay (2014-18), working as an offensive quality control coach for three seasons (2014-16) before assuming the role of tight ends coach for two years (2017-18). Overseeing the tight end position in 2018, Steele tutored tight ends Cameron Brate and O.J. Howard, helping the duo total 865 combined receiving yards while catching 11 of the team's 36 receiving touchdowns.
Prior to his eight seasons of NFL experience, Steele coached six years at the collegiate level to begin his coaching career. He spent his first three years in Colorado, serving as an offensive assistant at Mesa State University (2008) and an operations & recruiting assistant (2009) and graduate assistant (2010) at the University of Colorado.
Following his stint at Colorado, Steele was an offensive administrative assistant at the University of California-Berkeley for two seasons from 2011-12. Steele then went on to serve as tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator for one season (2013) at the University of California-Davis.
As a player, Steele originally entered the NFL as a college free agent with San Francisco in 2001 and elected to play for Frankfurt in NFL Europe in 2002. He spent time with the Vikings during training camp in 2003 and '04 before appearing in 17 career regular-season games and one postseason contest with Green Bay from 2004-05.
An All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference selection as a senior at Mesa State, Steele played his first two collegiate seasons at Fort Lewis College (Durango, Colo.) before concluding his career with the Mavericks. He earned a bachelor's degree in mass communications with an emphasis in broadcasting from Mesa and earned credit towards his mater's while attending the NFL's Executive Business Program at Harvard Business School.
Steele and his wife, Rachel, have two daughters, Cora and Elise, and two sons, Creed and Luke.
