Woodyard's World: Week 13

Posted Nov 27, 2013

Linebacker Wesley Woodyard blogs about receiving the team's Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.

Editor's note: Linebacker Wesley Woodyard, who was voted as a team captain for the fifth-consecutive season this year, will contribute blog entries thoughout the 2013 season. See below for his latest entry on receiving the team's Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.

It’s an honor to be named the Walter Payton Man of the Year for the Broncos. It’s something I hold near and dear to my heart.

I’ll say one thing though, it is a real competition to win that award. Everyone on our team is so active in the community, which is a great thing to see. We have a good group of guys on our team, so the guys that did get honored as well as the community ambassadors, I tip my hat to those guys. I was nominated as that my first year on the team and I think that just gives you that lift that you need to eventually hoist that Walter Payton Man of the Year award up.

Zane won the award last year, so he’s always in the running. One guy that I’m looking forward to see continuing to step up like he has been is Steve Johnson. He has been doing great job.

Besides the events that I have, I try to bring guys out to see how fun it is to do community service. A lot of people have that bad taste in their mouth. Everyone thinks community service means you’re going to be gone all day and you have to do a lot of stuff that you don’t want to, but just being involved in one kid’s life changes a kid’s life. To me, that is the motivation that you need as a human being to become a better citizen in the United States.

My next event is my baby. This will be my fourth annual toy drive. You can see the details on the flyer below this post.  This is something that I look forward to every year. Mayor Hancock joins us and man, he’s a great guy. I would just like to personally thank him for joining with me and making this event successful. It is amazing to see a football player team up with a mayor and having the mayor support me is something I’m really excited about.

I hope to see everyone there with a toy this year!
