Webster Needs Surgery, Welker Not Yet Cleared

Posted Dec 13, 2013

Head Coach John Fox updated the injury statuses of CB Kayvon Webster and WR Wes Welker Friday.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- The Broncos didn't escape Thursday's loss to the San Diego Chargers unscathed on the injury front.

Cornerback Kayvon Webster fractured his right thumb while making a tackle in the game. It's an injury that Head Coach John Fox said won't be season-ending, but required surgery Friday afternoon.

"It’s actually very similar to the Von Miller injury a couple of years ago," Fox said, referring to Miller's thumb injury in his rookie season that forced him to wear a cast. "So he will be day-to-day once he recoups from surgery."

As for whether Webster can play as soon as next Sunday against the Houston Texans, Fox said he can't predict the future.

"I just know it wasn’t season-ending," he said. "We’ll see how he works back. I think, not to compare people, but I think Von missed a game and then played with a cast.”

Fox also updated Wes Welker's status after the wide receiver missed Thursday's game while still recovering from a concussion suffered against the Tennesee Titans.

"He’s still working through the (concussion) protocol," Fox said. "Obviously his health is No. 1 in our concerns. He has not been cleared yet, we’ll keep you updated on that.”
