Tape Review Provides Learning Opportunity

Posted Sep 9, 2013

After having the chance to watch the film from Thursday's 49-27 win, some things jumped out at the Broncos coaches and players.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. --  For the trained eye, there a is huge difference between watching a football game live and watching it on tape.

So it's no surprise that after having a chance to take a look at the film from Thursday night’s win against the Ravens, several things jumped out to the Broncos players and coaches.

“I think just our guys’ effort,” Head Coach John Fox said Friday of what he noticed in the film. “Obviously in the first game there’s always going to be a lot of mistakes. I think Peyton (Manning) had an unbelievable night – I think that’s pretty well documented. I think when you get in the course of a game like that you don’t even really pay attention to those things.

“We were just trying to score as many points as possible, kind of pedal to the metal. When the dust settled he had seven touchdown passes.”

For wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, the film review was enjoyable because of the success the offense had against the Ravens, especially through the air.

“Caught the ball and scored touchdowns,” Thomas said Monday of what he saw watching the tape. “Three receivers had five of the touchdowns and Julius (Thomas) had the other two. It was fun going fast and Peyton dishing the ball out, everybody making plays.”

On the other side of the ball, Fox said that he took notice of Shaun Phillips and Chris Harris as they stepped up in the absence of Von Miller and Champ Bailey.

Safety Rahim Moore said Monday that he picked up some things that he wants to focus on this week including his angles and route recognition.

“I’ll have to work on that every day so that way, when you go out there on Sundays, you have no doubts in your game,” Moore said. “Me, personally, I think I did that today. I realized what I did wrong on the film and I tried to implement that on the field today.”

That’s exactly the type of attitude that Fox wants his players to take from the film study, especially as Week 1 provides a lot of learning opportunities — even after a 49-27 win.

"I saw that we made a lot of mistakes … as a football team," Fox said. "We spent a big part of the day after the game reviewing that and going over it. Like everybody in the league this week, it is the first game. There are a lot of question marks and there are a lot of corrections."

"We have a lot of improving to do, and how fast we get that done will determine how well we do going forward."
