PFF Highlights Performances by Clark, Johnson

Posted Oct 3, 2013

Pro Football Focus brought attention to the Week 4 performances by Chris Clark and Steven Johnson.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – With plenty to focus on during any given play, it’s easy to miss some performances that don’t come from the so-called skill positions.

Pro Football Focus took a look at the game film and singled out the performances from Chris Clark and Steven Johnson in two categories that don’t get a lot of attention – blocking and special teams.

Clark was named a Secret Superstar for his work against the Eagles. The left tackle, who played his second game filling in for All-Pro Ryan Clady, registered a 3.4 grade according to the site.

“On Sunday he spent much of the game lined up against Philadelphia Eagles outside linebacker Trent Cole and, while Cole would come away with two hurries, neither came against Clark,” the article said. “Furthermore, Cole, who has made a name for himself as one of the better run defenders in the league, was held to his lowest grade against the run this season. He may not have been dominant, but Clark more than held his own against one of the league’s best in that regard. However, it’s his play as a pass protector that’s landed him here. After all, you can’t ask for much more in pass protection than a perfect day with no pressure allowed.”

Linebacker Steven Johnson, who blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown against the Eagles made the list of special-teams standouts for Week 4 with a 2.0 grade.

“Playing on every Broncos special team unit bar field goal and extra-point kicks, only David Bruton plays as many special teams snaps as Johnson,” the site stated. “With these two players performing to such a high level it’s not surprising that the Broncos are our No. 1 special teams unit through Week 4.”
