He hasn’t seen the field at all in the postseason, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t prepared if called upon in Super Bowl XLVIII.
Following advice from the player he backs up, Osweiler said that he has prepared this week just as he would for any other game.
“Peyton’s advice to myself and the rest of the team was just to try to stick to your normal routine that you would for a normal game week back home,” Osweiler said. “Just do your best not to deviate from that and just try to keep things as normal as possible.”
For him, normal as possible means sticking to the same schedule that he has all year long.
“My normal week starts on Monday – there are certain things that I do after our previous game on Sunday at the facility,” Osweiler said. “Same thing with Tuesday and leading all the way up to game time. There is a certain set of things I do every day – morning, afternoon and evening when I go home. I am going to do my best to stick to that. The only difference is that I’m spending a lot more time at the hotel or my room versus the facility and my condo. But, hopefully it won’t be too difficult to stay on that schedule.”
There have been some wrenches thrown into that schedule that aren’t part of a normal week of preparation – such as doing interviews on a boat bobbing on the Hudson River.
“The feel as far as meetings go and practice, I would say everything is fairly normal except that the team seems extremely focused and locked in right now,” Osweiler said. “It is hard for things to feel normal, when you’re doing media on a boat, you’re doing meetings and sleeping in a hotel and this and that. In saying that, the Hyatt here in Jersey City and the rest of the committee have done a tremendous job of trying to make us comfortable and feel at home.”
Come Sunday, Osweiler feels like he will be well-prepared and ready to play if necessary – just like a normal week.
“That is something that not just the Super Bowl, but every single week, I go into preparation and that game like I’m going to play in the game,” he said. “As far as the Super Bowl, I’m treating it just like a regular game. If my number gets called, I will be prepared to go in.”
