Manning to Continue Working, Improving

Posted Aug 2, 2014

Though the offense had a successful Summer Scrimmage Saturday, Peyton Manning said the team needs to continue working hard and improving.

DENVER -- On Saturday afternoon Peyton Manning finally had the opportunity to do what he does best -- deliver a high powered offensive effort in front of Broncos fans.

Manning and the No. 1 offense scored on each outing and he said "we saw some good things."

"We will see some good things on film," he said. "It’s always nice to get a game-like operation. We get everybody on the sidelines, you are out there just with 10 other guys communicating, working some no-call situations, some run plays, pass plays. I think we will get some good knowledge from the film as well.”

With the team's first preseason game less than a week away, Manning said it is vital that they keep working hard every day. He said he is working on gaining a better comfort level with his new teammates and getting everybody "on the same page."

The Summer Scrimmage on Saturday was a step forward in that respect as the team got the opportunity to play in front of nearly 40,000 people. The crowd noise helped create a more game-like atmosphere.

"I don’t think you can get perfect timing on every single thing and training camp with the new players, but your core group of plays, I think it is important to have a good comfort level," Manning said. "That is what we are working towards right now.”

During 7-on-7s, Manning had a very nice seam throw to Emmanuel Sanders between Rahim Moore and T.J. Ward. Gaining that trust with new players will be key to the team's success this season. On Saturday, Manning seemed to have the "comfort" he has been working on all camp with his teammates.

The No. 1 offense went against the No. 2 defense. Players like Shaquil Barrett had the opportunity to play against Manning in a game-like situation.

“Peyton Manning is the best in the game right now," Barrett said. "He’s going to come out here and just showcase why he’s the best in the game and our job is to try to contain him a little bit. He had a good day. We got a little bit more work to do and just come out here and compete a little bit harder.”

Camp and the scrimmage are all about helping players improve and understand their roles. Though Barrett said the defense has a lot of work to do, he knows they can get there and "we just have to get back in there and play a little bit harder and compete a little bit harder."

The highlight of the day was Manning's touch pass to the corner of the end zone just out of Omar Bolden's reach and into the right hand of Jacob Tamme.

The offense had a great day today, but the work isn't over and the Broncos are ready to prove that the work they put in during OTAs, mini camp and training camp is paying off.

"We’re trying to get better, trying to be a better team than we were last year but that started back in April though when we got back on the offseason program," Manning said. "We have worked hard every day and as a veteran player, I certainly appreciate that.”
