Manning Named Colorado Athlete of the Year

Posted Jan 7, 2014

For the second consecutive year, QB Peyton Manning has been named the Colorado Athlete of the Year.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- For the second consecutive year, quarterback Peyton Manning has been named the Colorado Athlete of the Year.

The Colorado Sports Hall of Fame announced the honor Tuesday afternoon. Manning is joined by world-champion skier Mikaela Shiffrin, who was named the women's Colorado Athlete of the Year for 2013.

The decisions were made at a meeting on Tuesday, and Manning now joins Alex English (1982, '85), Joe Sakic (1996, 2001) and teammate Champ Bailey (2005-06) as a two-time Colroado Sports Hall of Fame professional Athlete of the Year receipient.

Manning, already named Sports Illustrated's 2013 Sportsman of the Year, a Pro Bowler for the 13th time and a first-team Associated Press All-Pro for the seventh time, set new single-season NFL records for passing yards (5,477) and passing touchdowns (55) this season.

In the process, he led the Broncos to their second consecutive 13-3 season and third consecutive AFC West title. Denver is the No. 1 seed in the AFC for the second straight postseason, and the team is set to take on the AFC West-rival San Diego Chargers Sunday at Sports Authority Field at Mile High in the Divisional Round of the playoffs.

Shiffrin, an 18-year-old, won the slalom title at the 2013 World Championships in Schladming, Austria, where she also placed sixth in the giant slalom.

During her 2013 season, she won four slalom event titles, beginning with first-place finishes in Sweden and Croatia.

Other Athletes of the Year that will be honored in a banquet this April are college honorees Kapri Bibbs or Colorado State University and Barbara Szabo of Western State College. The high school honorees are Christian McCaffrey -- son of former Broncos wide receiver Ed -- of Valor Christian and Elise Cranny of Niwot. Cody Field with Special Olympics Colorado is the 2013 recipient of the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame’s Disabled Athlete Recognition Award.

The Athletes-of-the-Year selections will be honored at the April 17 banquet along with the newest Colorado Sports Hall of Fame inductees Otis Armstrong, Forrest B. “Frosty” Cox, Andy Gambucci, Darian Hagan, Todd Helton and Dorothy Mauk. The Colorado Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2014 was selected this past October.

The Athletes of the Year will be honored at an April 17 banquet at the Denver Marriott City Center Hotel. In addition, the newest Colorado Sports Hall of Fame inductees will be honored -- a class that includes former Broncos running back Otis Armstrong, Forrest B. “Frosty” Cox, Andy Gambucci, Darian Hagan, Todd Helton and Dorothy Mauk.

Tickets to the banquet are $195 each and sponsor tables start at $2,500. For additional for ticket and table information, please call the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame at (720) 258-3535. The Colorado Sports Hall of Fame & Museum is located at Gate 1 on the west side of Sports Authority Field at Mile High at 1701 Bryant Street in Denver.
