Manning Eyeing Wins, Not Records

Posted Dec 10, 2013

Quarterback Peyton Manning said the only record he cares about is the team's win-loss record.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- The Broncos offense is on pace to break a handful of NFL records, from total points and touchdowns to first downs on the season.

At the head of that attack is quarterback Peyton Manning, who is on track to set a new league record for passing yards and touchdowns this season.

But those records are the furthest thing from his mind.

"The one we’re concerned with is our win-loss record," Manning said. "It tells you how competitive our division that you’re still having to take care of business each week to have a chance to possibly when the division and that’s where our focus is. Our job as an offense is to score points, score more than our opponent. We’re playing the Chargers this week. Their offense is hot. Philip (Rivers) is having a great year. We have to score points and however we do that – running the ball, throwing the ball, kicking field goals, kicking 64-yard field goals – whatever we have to do, that’s our job.”

When asked whether he would focus more on the record if he's a touchdown away, Manning harkened back to one of his first seasons with the Indianapolis Colts.

"We were playing Cleveland late in the season and we had a touchdown streak going – consecutive games," he said. "We got down there late and hadn’t thrown one and we had a pass play called. They were dropping eight guys, checked to a run and got the touchdown and the streak ended. You don’t think twice about it. You have to do your job to get your team into the end zone – whatever that is. That’s how I’ve always approached it.”

Tight end Julius Thomas, who last Sunday broke Shannon Sharpe's Broncos record for touchdown receptions in a season by a tight end, agreed with that approach.

But he admitted that if the records come organically, he wouldn't mind.

"The records aren’t something that we talk about or we discuss," said Thomas, one of an NF-record four Broncos with double-digit touchdowns this year. "I didn’t know that there are as many records (Manning) hasn’t broken yet. I know that when we have the kind of success that we’ve had as a team this year, that’s what it’ll lead to. If that means we’re winning games and we’re playing great offensively, then I hope he breaks as many records as possible.”
