Legacy High School to Represent Broncos

Posted Jul 12, 2014

Legacy High School will represent the Denver Broncos at the NFL National 7-on-7 Tournament.

DENVER, Colo. -- Legacy High School leaves this Sunday for Indianapolis to compete in the NFL’s High School Player Development National 7-on-7 Tournament, which features the top high school athletes from around the country. Legacy advanced to Indianapolis by winning the fourth annual Denver Broncos 7-on-7 tournament, which was held at All City Stadium and the Broncos training facility last month.

Broncos High School 7-on-7, which was presented by Nike and the Colorado National Guard, featured a 64-team pool play over three days of competition at All City Stadium. 16 teams, one from each pool, advanced to single-elimination play, which was held at the Broncos training facility on Saturday, June 21.

“Broncos 7-on-7 is always a great opportunity for us to get some work in during the summer and improve as a football team,” said Legacy Head Coach Wayne Voorhees.

Legacy won its pool and then beat Elizabeth, Kennedy and Columbine at Dove Valley to return to the championship game for the second year in a row.

“Last year we were in the championship so we knew if we came out and played well we had a shot. Every year you go into it thinking that if you can get to Dove Valley and the championship bracket, it’s definitely a possibility,” said Voorhees.

Legacy recorded an impressive 31-13 victory over Cherokee Trail in the championship game to win the tournament and earn the trip to Indianapolis.

As part of the trip, Legacy student athletes will participate in character development training through speaker series, breakout sessions and group activities.

“They hear about time management, discipline, social media, all those kinds of things during the character development sessions. I think it’s just more valuable hearing from another authority in the NFL and all the people they’re going to bring in,” said Voorhees.

The national 7-on-7 tournament features 32 teams, one from each NFL market, and includes round-robin format play followed by a single-elimination tournament.

Voorhees noted that Legacy High School, which is located about 30 minutes north of Sports Authority Field at Mile High Stadium in Broomfield, Colo., to represent the Denver Broncos at the tournament.

“I think it’s extremely important that we represent the Broncos—that’s our hometown team and everybody is a Broncos fan. To be able to go out there and represent the Broncos is a great honor for our kids.”

Legacy will begin their National 7-on-7 competition on Monday, July 14 at the Indianapolis Colts’ training facility.
