Key Plays: Broncos at Giants

Posted Sep 15, 2013

A look at some critical non-scoring plays in Denver’s 41-23 victory against the New York Giants.

Broncos ball: First-and-6 from the NYG 6, 10:59 to play, first quarter
After running for three yards, Montee Ball fumbled the football into the end zone, where it was recovered by the Giants, ending Denver’s game-opening drive. Seven plays later, New York turned what could have been a 7-0 Denver lead into a 3-0 advantage of its own.

Broncos ball: Third-and-7 from the NYG 37, 14:31 to play, second quarter
Facing a third down at the edge of field goal territory, Peyton Manning found Wes Welker for a pickup of 17 yards to extend the Broncos’ drive. On the next play, Knowshon Moreno ran for the first of his two touchdowns on the day to put Denver ahead 7-3.

Giants ball: First-and-10 from the DEN 49, 0:20 to play, second quarter
After a 34-yard completion from Eli Manning to Hakeem Nicks, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie was flagged for a 21-yard pass interference penalty to put the Giants in scoring range at the end of the first half. Rodgers-Cromartie got his revenge, however, as he intercepted Manning’s pass in the end zone for a touchback that preserved Denver’s 10-9 lead at the break.

Giants ball: Second-and-2 from the NYG 28, 15:00 to play, fourth quarter
The fourth quarter began with a big swing play for the Broncos that began when Tony Carter deflected Eli Manning’s pass. Carter then kicked the ball into the air and Chris Harris came up with the interception. The Broncos took advantage of the short field with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Peyton Manning to Julius Thomas that gave Denver a 31-16 lead five plays later.
