LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- Early in his Tuesday-morning stint as a FedEx Office employee, ![]()
For a busy Bronco balancing a full schedule at the end of the football season, this was excellent news.
"I'm the worst gift-wrapper, and I'm a procrastinator, so it's a good thing FedEx has this program," Lloyd said with a laugh. "I'm definitely going to be the one in here on Thursday trying to get things out at the last minute."
Lloyd learned this and other important holiday packing-and-shipping lessons when he spent time on his off day participating in FedEx Office's "Pack and Ship with the Pros" promotion. Lloyd's appearance was one of seven in NFL cities across the nation throughout November and December to highlight the chain's busiest time of the year.
The wide receiver stepped behind the counter on Tuesday to assist customers and sign autographs at the local store, while a pair of Denver Broncos Cheerleaders and Miles the Mascot spread holiday cheer to a crowd that waited patiently for their turn at the register. Customers also had the opportunity to sign up for a chance to win 2011 Broncos season tickets and other team merchandise as they took care of their last-minute holiday shipping.
"The holidays always bring the best out of people," Lloyd said, "and it's good to be out here giving my time and hopefully, bringing more Christmas cheer to people."
Lloyd, who sported his very own white employee name tag, began his appearance by getting a lesson in how to tape up a package and get it ready to ship. Soon, the receiver enjoying a career season in 2010 was ready to assist actual customers.
T.J. Davis, a 12-year-old from Lakewood, Colo., was one of the first fans through Lloyd's line. After the veteran wideout helped Davis and his family ready a large package for shipping, the youngster gave Lloyd's work his seal of approval.
"His tape work was pretty good," Davis said. "It was like he was a professional already."
Lloyd will use those lessons to make sure his gifts make it to their destinations on time this year.
The second-year Bronco said his family uses a "Secret Santa" strategy to cut down on the amount of presents each person must shop for, and this year, he's excited to send his nephews in California "some cool clothes they're really going to like." He said a new toiletry set tops his own holiday wish list this year.
All the holiday spirit flowing at the store got Lloyd thinking about some of his favorite memories, laughing as recounted the night when he tried to wait up for Santa Claus on Christmas eve.
Handling a new job as a FedEx Office employee proved easier than his attempt as a 7-year-old to meet Kris Kringle.
"I was going to catch him, but I ended up falling asleep," Lloyd said. "When I woke up there was a bike and all kinds of presents under the tree. I completely missed him."
