Elway Plans to 'Sit Down with Champ'

Posted Feb 21, 2014

On Friday, EVP of Football Ops/GM John Elway said he plans to talk with cornerback Champ Bailey about what the veteran wants to do.

INDIANAPOLIS -- John Elway's to-do list is long, and the time the executive vice president of football operations/general manager has to accomplish all the tasks on it is short, with less than three weeks separating the Broncos from the start of free agency.

One task that must be handled is the status of Champ Bailey's contract. Bailey has one year remaining on the four-year deal that he signed in February 2011, and speculation about Bailey's future has been rampant in recent months.

"We're still in the process of talking about that and seeing what we're going to do there," Elway said. "I'm going to sit down with Champ, first of all, and find out what he wants to do, and go from there."

The options appear to be clear, and one could be a restructured deal.

Bailey said before Super Bowl XLVIII that retirement was not on his mind, and that he wanted to keep playing "'til I can't, or 'til I don't like it."

"I really don't know. I don't think about retiring," Bailey said. "I haven't made any plans to retire. So I'm not really going to talk about it much, because it's not in my mind."
