Elway Looks to Draft's Final Day

Posted May 9, 2014

EVP of Football Operations/GM John Elway evaluates how the draft stands entering rounds four through seven.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- On Thursday, Executive Vice President of Football Operations/General Manager John Elway predicted that with so much depth remaining on the offensive side of the ball, the Broncos could look that way on day two of the draft.

That held true when Denver selected wide receiver Cody Latimer in the second round and offensive lineman Michael Schofield in the third.

Day three, featuring rounds four through seven, won't be quite as predictable.

“Well, it’s hard to say," Elway said of the strength of the remainder of the draft. "It’s leveled out. I think with the little run on the receivers, that’s thinned out, but there are still some running backs and there are still players on the board. It’s pretty levelled, whether it’s offense or defense. We’ll kind of wait and see what gets to us in the fourth (round)."

As for how the draft has played out for the Broncos so far, Elway said it's a credit to the team's philosophy and the people he works with in the front office.

“The bottom line — to me — with the draft, is to be patient. Stick with your board and be patient," he said. "I’m fortunate with the fact that I work with tremendous personnel people with [Director of Player Personnel] Matt Russell and [Director of Pro Personnel] Tom Heckert and [Assistant Director of College Scouting] Lenny McGill, who is the assistant college director and [National Scout] Adam Peters — they do a tremendous job. So we believe in what we’re doing and we stay patient. I think that’s the key thing is to stay patient and not try to reach and not try to chase. When you have to chase, chase at the right time. So we have been fortunate and so far have been able to do that.”
