Bruton, Western Dairy’s Fuel Up to Play 60 spokesperson, joined approximately 400 other leaders in education, health/nutrition, academia, government, policy and the corporate and philanthropic sectors to promote children’s health and wellness.
Bruton was honored that he was asked to speak at the event.
“It was a big venue,” Bruton said. “They asked me to participate in it and they said I would be a good person to be there. Honestly I was thrilled about the invitation and that I could be out there with a bunch of kids and continue to promote the message of being healthy and active.”
He said this program is unique because the student ambassadors help make the program their own, so the adults aren’t the only ones planning the activities.
Throughout the day, Bruton answered questions at a roundtable Q&A and played games with the students, including flag football. Bruton said it was “special” interacting with the kids and witnessing how engaged they were by the program.
“I was just being a kid with them,” he said.
Bruton believes that promoting health education is vital because of childhood obesity in the United States.
“We see such a huge epidemic here and it’s something that we need to tackle,” Bruton said. “I feel like this program is definitely promoting good health and good habits. You definitely build your habits when you’re young. People always say that kids are the future, that whole cliché, but they’re now. That epidemic is now. This program is now.”
