Broncos Up for Never Say Never Moment

Posted Jan 3, 2014

The Broncos' thrilling 51-48 victory over the Cowboys in Week 5 has been nominated for the GMC “Never Say Never Moment of the Year” award.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- In a record-breaking regular season filled with milestones and memorable games, one particular performance from the Broncos’ 13-3 campaign has been selected among the most unforgettable of the 2013 NFL season.

The Broncos’ thrilling fourth-quarter comeback in a 51-48 win over the Cowboys in Week 5 is one of five finalist nominees for the GMC “Never Say Never Moment of the Year” award – given to the moment or play of the year that best represented determination and perseverance.

The winner of the award will be announced on Saturday, Feb. 1 – the night before Super Bowl XLVIII – during the “3rd Annual NFL Honors” show. The two-hour primetime special will air nationally on FOX that evening.

Determination and perseverance are certainly fitting adjectives to describe the Broncos’ performance in the clutch that helped Denver leave AT&T Stadium as a victor in the second-highest scoring game since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970.

Trailing 48-41 with 7:19 to play, quarterback Peyton Manning marched the Broncos on a nine-play, 73-yard drive – including a crucial 16-yard pass to wide receiver Wes Welker on second-and-goal from the Dallas 17 – to set up running back Knowshon Moreno’s game-tying 1-yard touchdown plunge with 2:39 to play.

Then, on an afternoon featuring 1,039 combined yards of total offense, it was a defensive play that provided arguably the game’s defining moment.

On the ensuing possession, linebacker Danny Trevathan made a diving interception of Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo at the Dallas 24-yard line, turning the ball back over to the Broncos and putting the game in the hands of Manning and the offense.

Manning – who threw for 414 yards and four touchdowns, as well as running for a score – eventually moved the Broncos to the 10-yard line, setting up kicker Matt Prater with a 28-yard field goal attempt.

Prater’s kick sailed through the uprights as time expired, clinching the win for the Broncos and ending a day of football that won’t soon be forgotten.

“I thought this was probably our best character victory as far as coming from behind," Head Coach John Fox said after the game.

Manning noted that he hoped playing through such a tough situation and coming out victorious would be a learning experience that could benefit the Broncos later on.

“I hope it does (mean something)," Manning said. "I’ve always believed in prior seasons that you could refer to an earlier game late in the season and say, 'Hey, remember in Dallas we were down? We can come back.' Remember the situation. Let’s get the first down and not go out of bounds. We can learn from this situation and from this game and hopefully use it down the road to help us.”
