Broncos Open 2010 Home Slate Against Seattle

THIS WEEK'S GAME:
The Denver Broncos will host the Seattle Seahwaks in their 2010 home opener on Sunday. Kickoff at INVESCO Field at Mile High is set for 2:05 p.m. MDT.

QUICK HITS:

  • The Denver Broncos are in their sixth decade of professional football with a 411-368-10 (.527) combined record. They have the eighth-most wins among AFL/NFL franchises since 1960.
  • Denver finished with a 93-67 (.581) regular-season record during the 2000s to mark its third consecutive decade with 90 or more victories—the only team in the NFL to accomplish that feat during the last three decades.
  • The Broncos own an NFL-best 23-3 record in home openers since 1984, as the club has won its last 10 such games to tie for the third-longest home opener winning streak in league history.
  • Head Coach Josh McDaniels is in his second season leading the club after totaling the third-most wins (8) by a rookie head coach in Broncos annals.
  • McDaniels and General Manager Brian Xanders made several key acquisitions during the offseason, including the signing of three-time Pro Bowler DL Jamal Williams, hometown product DL Justin Bannan (University of Colorado) and secondary specialist CB Nate Jones.

OFFENSE:
Kyle Orton, who is third among active starting NFL quarterbacks with a .792 winning percentage (19-5) at home, led all players in Week 1 with five completions of 25 yards or more.

DEFENSE:
D.J. Williams paced the club with 11 tackles (9 solo) in its season opener at Jacksonville and has averaged the fifth-most tackles per game (8.3) in the NFL since 2007, according to press box totals.

SPECIAL TEAMS:
Matt Prater, who last week at Jacksonville kicked a 54-yard field goal in the fourth quarter, owns the highest percentage of field goals made from 50+ yards in NFL history (80.0% / 8-of-10) among players who started their career after 1970 (min. 10 att.).

BRONCOS IN HOME OPENERS:

The Broncos are 23-3 in home openers since 1984 for an .885 winning percentage that is the best in the NFL.

Denver, which has not lost a home opener at INVESCO Field at Mile High (9-0, since 2001), enters Sunday’s game against Seattle having won its last 10 home openers (since 2000). That streak is the longest current streak in the league and is tied for the third longest in the NFL since the 1970 merger.

All-time, Denver is 37-12-1 (.750) in home openers, a mark that includes a 14-6 record in home openers that are not its first overall game of the season.

BRONCOS VS. SEAHAWKS -- POINTS OF INTEREST:

The Broncos look win win their 11th consecutive home opener Sunday when they host former the AFC West rival Seahawks... Denver, which is 23-3 in regular-season home openers since 1984, last played Seattle to open its home slate in 1988 in a 21-14 loss... This is the 53rd meeting between the two clubs in the regular season with the Broncos owning a 31-18 advantage, including a 20-5 record at home... Denver’s .635 overall winning percentage against Seattle represents its fourth-best record against an opponent in regular seaosn and postseason play combined (min. 10 games played)... The Broncos look to improve upon their opening-month record, which at 38-15 (.717) since 1996 ranks first in the league... Head Coach Josh McDaniels guided Denver to a 6-0 record to begin the 2009 season, a start that tied for the third best by a rookie NFL head coach since 1930... Now in their sixth decade of professional football in 2010, the Broncos are one of just four teams to record three 90+ win decades since 1960 and the only organization to do so in each of the last three decades... During the Pat Bowlen era (1984-Pres.), the Broncos have won more regular-season games (251) and overall games (266) than any AFC team (second most in NFL)... Denver had five players selected to the 2010 Pro Bowl with that total tying for its most since 2001 (T-7th overall in club annals)... RB Correll Buckhalter ranked sixth in the NFL in yards per rush (5.4) and set career highs in rushing yards (642) and receptions (31) in 2009... OL Ryan Clady, named to the Pro Bowl (starter) for the first time, became the 11th tackle in league annals to earn a Pro Bowl selection by his second professional season... Clady was named to the inaugural USA Football/NFLPA “All-Fundamentals” Team as the youngest member (23) to receive the honor... LB D.J. Bailey has totaled the most interceptions (46) in the NFL among cornerbacks since entering the league in 1999 and has the seventh-most interceptions (28) by a Bronco in team annals... S Brian Dawkins was named a Pro Bowl starter in his first season with Denver and tied former Broncos S Steve Atwater for the third-most Pro Bowl selections (8) by a safety in NFL history... WR Eddie Royal is one of two players in the NFL (Chargers RB Darren Sproles) to total at least 1,500 yards from scrimmage (1,533) and 1,500 kick return yards (1,696) since 2008... K Matt Prater owns the best field goal percentage from 50 or more yards (.800 / 8-of-10) in NFL history among players who started thier career after 1970 (min. 10 att.)... Rookie CB Perrish Cox leads the team with two special-teams tackles.

ROOKIE OFFENSIVE LINEMEN ACHIEVE RARE FEAT:

Broncos rookie offensive linemen Zane Beadles (right tackle) and J.D. Walton (center) started for Denver in its regular-season opener at Jacksonville. The pair became the first rookies in franchise history (since 1968) to start a regular-season opener at those respective positions.

Overall, Beadles and Walton became the sixth and seventh rookies in team history to start a regular-season opener, and the first since OL Ryan Clady in 2008.

First-year offensive lineman Stanley Daniels also made his first career regular-season start against Jacksonville at left guard, making the Broncos the first team since Buffalo in 2009 (LT Demetrius Bell, LG Andy Levitre, RG Eric Wood) to start three players along the offensive line in the season opener who had no previous regular-season starting experience.

Broncos safety Brian Dawkins is one of four players in NFL history to post at least 33 career interceptions and 20 career sacks. He owns 36 interceptions and 21 sacks in his 15 professional seasons.
