Broncos Help Out in Holiday Shopping Trip

Posted Dec 13, 2011

Players spent part of Monday night at a SuperTarget to help kids from a Boys and Girls Club of Metro Denver buy gifts for their families.

LONE TREE, Colo. -- “Victory Monday” is a term used to describe the off-day players receive after a win Sunday.

However, after the Broncos big win over the Chicago Bears in Week 14, the following Monday was a victory for more than just the players.

About a dozen Broncos players joined forces Monday evening to take part in the event “Shop With a Bronco.” The event brought children aged 8-14 from Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Denver into a SuperTarget where the players helped them shop for Christmas presents for their families.

Each child was given a budget – in the form of a Target gift card – in which they could buy gifts at the store with the assistance of the players.

“Whenever you get the opportunity to give back, it's so important to do that,” linebacker Joe Mays said. “Especially with us being blessed to get paid to do what we love to do, it's important to give back. I was a big fan of this as soon as they asked me to do it.”

Mays and his wife went around the store with two little girls, helping them pick out gifts from Barbies to jewelry and clothes.

“It feels good,” Mays said. “First of all, just to see a smile on a kid's face. It's just great to see that. Just knowing that we're doing something positive in a kid's life, for him and his family. It's just a great deal. I love to do things like this. I just love to give back.”

Eric Decker, Brady Quinn and Demaryius Thomas hosted the event, but numerous teammates showed up including Julius Thomas, Adam Weber, Lonie Paxton, Britton Colquitt, Mays, Kyle McCarthy, Matt Willis, Chris Kuper and J.D. Walton.

While Broncos players continuously volunteer their time year-round, they said it’s extremely important to lend a hand during the holiday.

“It's always a good feeling to come out and help when you can, especially around the holiday season,” McCarthy said. “There's nothing better than to give back to the community and they support us tremendously in every way they can.”

Even though the team is in the midst of a very competitive football season, they said it’s good to get away from football for just a few hours and focus on the community at large.

“No doubt about it,” Mays said. “This right here, this is what creates memories. Football does too, but this creates memories outside of football and whenever you get the opportunity to do this, you get away and clear your head, it's just a great thing to do. So I'm enjoying it, my wife is enjoying it and I'm going to continue to do this.”
