Allen Pegged as Defensive Coordinator

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- On Monday, Dennis Allen agreed to terms to become the Broncos' defensive coordinator.

Allen spent the previous five years coaching with the New Orleans Saints, including the past three as secondary coach.

This season, the Saints ranked fourth in the league in pass defense, one of just five teams to hold opponents to less than 200 passing yards per game.

In 2009, he coached a group of defensive backs that posted 20 interceptions -- five of which were returned for touchdowns -- in the regular season. On a playoff run that resulted in a world championship, cornerback Tracy Porter intercepted the pass that sealed a Saints victory in Super Bowl XLIV.

The 10-year coach also spent two seasons as an assistant defensive line coach for the Saints, and his group combined for 48.5 sacks, 10 forced fumbles and 10 fumble recoveries during that stretch.

His previous coaching experience includes four seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, the final two as a defensive assistant/quality control with an emphasis on working with the defensive line. In 2004, the Falcons led the league for the first time in franchise history with 48 sacks and defensive end Patrick Kerney headed to the Pro Bowl.

Allen worked in the college ranks from 1996-2001, spending four years coaching at his alma mater, Texas A&M, and two at the University of Tulsa.

He joins Mike McCoy (Offensive Coordinator), Jeff Rodgers (Special Teams Coordinator), Clancy Barone (Tight Ends), Brian Callahan (Offensive Quality Control), Adam Gase (Quarterbacks), Dave Magazu (Offensive Line), Wayne Nunnely (Defensive Line), Jay Rodgers (Defensive Quality Control), Eric Studesville (Running Backs) and Tyke Tolbert (Wide Receivers) on Head Coach John Fox's 2011 coaching staff.
