2014 NFL Draft Preview: Tight Ends

Posted Mar 31, 2014

A look at the top tight end prospects in the 2014 NFL Draft.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- In the weeks leading up to the 2014 NFL Draft, DenverBroncos.com is taking a look at the draft prospects position-by-position.

We will devote a week to each group, looking back at some of the Broncos' previous picks at the position and showcasing the top prospects along with providing independent analyst Andrew Mason's take on what the Broncos might do at the position this year.

This week: tight ends.

Below you will find five of the top prospects at tight end. For a photo gallery of the position group, click here.

• POSITION: Tight end
• COLLEGE: Texas Tech
• HEIGHT: 6'5"
• WEIGHT: 265
• CAREER STATS: 138 rec.; 1,818 yds.; 13 TDs
• COMBINE: 4.74 40-yd. dash; 28 bench reps; 33.0 in. vert. jump
On whether he's a tight end or a wide receiver:
"I think I’m a mixture of both. I think that’s why I’m so unique. It’s kind of a revolution to the game now with what tight ends can bring across the board. I like to see myself as both a tight end and as a receiver."
Player • POSITION: Tight end
• COLLEGE: North Carolina
• HEIGHT: 6'4"
• WEIGHT: 250
• CAREER STATS: 112 rec.; 1,805 yds.; 8 TDs
• COMBINE: 4.60 40-yd. dash; 24 bench reps; 32.0 in. vert. jump
On why defenders don't press him at the line:
"I think why teams don't press me is because they can't. I will not be pressed at the line of scrimmage. That's a prideful thing of mine. It'd be best to leave the play to cover y'all's back.”
• POSITION: Tight end
• HEIGHT: 6'5"
• WEIGHT: 265
• CAREER STATS: 91 rec.; 899 yds.; 10 TDs
• COMBINE: 4.76 40-yd. dash; 25 bench reps; 31.5 in. vert. jump
On whether he's a red-zone threat:
“Oh, definitely. I feel like last year I established that a little bit. At Iowa we ran the ball about 70 percent of the time, but when we were down in the red zone our offensive coordinator was trying to look toward me. I think I did a fair share of catching the ball in the end zone.”
Player • POSITION: Tight end
• COLLEGE: Notre Dame
• HEIGHT: 6'6"
• WEIGHT: 270
• CAREER STATS: 37 rec.; 573 yds.; 6 TDs
• COMBINE: 27 bench reps; 32.0 in. vert. jump; 114.0 in. broad jump
On how he'll stand out:
"Play to your strengths, let the teams do the judging and go as hard as I can. I can block and I enjoy blocking. I think that’s something I can use to my advantage."
• POSITION: Tight end
• COLLEGE: Washington
• HEIGHT: 6'5"
• WEIGHT: 262
• CAREER STATS: 146 rec.; 1,840 yds.; 21 TDs
• COMBINE: 20 bench reps
On other basketball players turned tight ends:
“I met Jimmy Graham when I was in Miami taking an unofficial visit, met him a while back when he was training for the draft, and I watched Julius Thomas, who went to Portland State and played basketball. They are great tight ends in their own right and they do a lot of good things and I think I can do a lot of good things also.”
