2014 NFL Draft Preview: Running Backs

Posted Mar 17, 2014

A look at the top running back prospects in the 2014 NFL Draft.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- In the weeks leading up to the 2014 NFL Draft, DenverBroncos.com is taking a look at the draft prospects position-by-position.

We will devote a week to each group, looking back at some of the Broncos' previous picks at the position and showcasing the top prospects along with providing independent analyst Andrew Mason's take on what the Broncos might do at the position this year.

This week: running backs.

Below you will find five of the top prospects at running back. For a photo gallery of the position group, click here.

TOP PROSPECTS AT THE POSITION:

KA'DEEM CAREY
• POSITION: Running back
• COLLEGE: Arizona
• HEIGHT: 5'9"
• WEIGHT: 207
• CAREER STATS: 4,239 rushing yds.; 48 rushing TDs
• COMBINE: 4.70 40-yd. dash; 19 bench reps; 32.5 in. vert. jump
On which backs he compares himself to:
"I'd say a mix between Adrian Peterson and LeSean McCoy. Adrian Peterson runs hard and LeSean McCoy has the shakes in the open field to break a safety down. My (favorite) running back is Brian Westbrook because he catches, he blocks -- he does it all."
Player
JEREMY HILL
Player • POSITION: Running back
• COLLEGE: LSU
• HEIGHT: 6'1"
• WEIGHT: 233
• CAREER STATS: 2,156 rushing yds.; 28 rushing TDs
• COMBINE: 4.66 40-yd. dash; 20 bench reps; 29.0 in. vert. jump
On the part of his game that will best translate to the NFL:
"Being in a pro style offense helps, having (LSU Offensive Coordinator) Cam Cameron come in and bring a lot of NFL protections and run schemes into the mix definitely helps me a lot. It transfers right over to the NFL teams. The learning curve for me is going to be a lot smaller than a lot of other guys coming into the NFL.”
CARLOS HYDE
• POSITION: Running back
• COLLEGE: Ohio State
• HEIGHT: 6'0"
• WEIGHT: 230
• CAREER STATS: 3,198 rushing yds.; 37 rushing TDs
• COMBINE: 4.66 40-yd. dash; 19 bench reps; 34.5 in. vert. jump
On his running style:
“I would say my running style is violent. Not too many times am I trying to make you miss. I am trying to run through you, trying to get the yards we need. Sometimes I will make you miss because you expect me to run through you. That’s how I describe it.”
Player
TRE MASON
Player • POSITION: Running back
• COLLEGE: Auburn
• HEIGHT: 5'8"
• WEIGHT: 207
• CAREER STATS: 2,979 rushing yds.; 32 rushing TDs
• COMBINE: 4.50 40-yd. dash; 38.5 in. vert. jump; 126.0 in. broad jump
On why he's the best back in the draft:
"I feel like I'm the best running back in this draft class because I broke Bo Jackson's rushing record in the season. If he was considered one of the best to do it and I broke his, then I feel like I should be the No. 1 running back in this draft."
BISHOP SANKEY
• POSITION: Running back
• COLLEGE: Washington
• HEIGHT: 5'9"
• WEIGHT: 209
• CAREER STATS: 3,496 rushing yds.; 37 rushing TDs
• COMBINE: 4.49 40-yd. dash; 26 bench reps; 35.5 in. vert. jump
On why he said he studies Bengals RB Giovani Bernard:
“I think we both have good field vision. We're able to see what's happening in front of us and able to make the proper reads and cuts based on what the defense is doing. I also think my agility, my lateral quickness and my elusiveness is something I take pride in. And I think it's one of my strengths.”
