2014 NFL Draft Preview: Quarterbacks

Posted Mar 10, 2014

A look at the top quarterback prospects in the 2014 NFL Draft.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- In the weeks leading up to the 2014 NFL Draft, DenverBroncos.com is taking a look at the draft prospects position-by-position.

We will devote a week to each group, looking back at some of the Broncos' previous picks at the position and showcasing the top prospects along with providing independent analyst Andrew Mason's take on what the Broncos might do at the position this year.

This week: quarterbacks.

Below you will find five of the top prospects at quarterback. For a photo gallery of the position group, click here.

TOP PROSPECTS AT THE POSITION:

BLAKE BORTLES
• POSITION: Quarterback
• COLLEGE: Central Florida
• HEIGHT: 6'5"
• WEIGHT: 232
• CAREER STATS: 7,598 passing yds.; 56 passing TDs; 19 INTs
• COMBINE: 4.93 40-yd. dash; 32.5 in. vert. jump; 115 in. broad jump
On what he will bring an NFL team:
"I think kind of the skill set I possess is being able to extend plays, being able to handle a lot of offense. I think making the right decisions on and off the field, not embarrassing the franchise or your last name I think is huge, especially when you’re playing quarterback in the National Football League."

TEDDY BRIDGEWATER
Player • POSITION: Quarterback
• COLLEGE: Louisville
• HEIGHT: 6'2"
• WEIGHT: 214
• CAREER STATS: 9,817 passing yds.; 72 passing TDs; 24 INTs
• COMBINE: 30.0 in. vert. jump; 113.0 in. broad jump
On his love of the game:
"I eat, sleep and breathe football. There’s not a moment that goes by that I’m not thinking about football, whether I’m playing a game, practicing, watching film, even on the video game. A lot of people ask me what do I do on the video game. I call it taking virtual reps.”
DEREK CARR
• POSITION: Quarterback
• COLLEGE: Fresno State
• HEIGHT: 6'2"
• WEIGHT: 214
• CAREER STATS: 12,842 passing yds.; 113 passing TDs; 24 INTs
• COMBINE: 4.69 40-yd. dash; 34.5 in. vert. jump; 110.0 in. broad jump
On teams asking about his brother:
“They do ask a lot what is similar about us. Physically, we’re the same build. He’s probably eight more pounds. We run the same. We throw a little different, but we have the same mannerisms. They want to know those things because he was the first pick for a reason. ... At the same time, what’s different? Our personalities are different. I’m a little more open. He’s kept to himself. We’re different in a lot of ways.”

JOHNNY MANZIEL
Player • POSITION: Quarterback
• COLLEGE: Texas A&M
• HEIGHT: 6'0"
• WEIGHT: 207
• CAREER STATS: 7,820 passing yds.; 93 total TDs; 22 INTs
• COMBINE: 4.68 40-yd. dash; 31.5 in. vert. jump; 113.0 in. broad jump
On how he has grown on and off the field:
"I think you look at on-the-field stuff, from freshman year until what I was this year, I tried to really hone in on some things this year, get better in the pocket and continue to develop as a passer. Off the field, some scrutiny off the field, but continuing to learn from my mistakes and continuing to grow up."
AJ McCARRON
• POSITION: Quarterback
• COLLEGE: Alabama
• HEIGHT: 6'3"
• WEIGHT: 220
• CAREER STATS: 9,019 passing yds.; 77 passing TDs; 15 INTs
• COMBINE: 4.94 40-yd. dash; 28.0 in. vert. jump; 99.0 in. broad jump
On playing for Coach Saban:
“I think it’s huge. Everybody talks about NFL defenses, Coach (Nick) Saban is the closest you can get to facing an NFL defense (in college). Especially blitz-wise, he makes up NFL blitzes. I feel like I’ve seen every type of defense you could possibly see. I’m the most-experienced guy when it comes to that.”
